Tabula Rasa

Hunters and Gatherers.

Just as I did with ON1 Photo RAW, I've also been collecting and installing styles in Darktable for years.
My main source was the DTStyles.net website, which was still available at the time—it had a ton of styles, some of which were really good. At least in my opinion.

In the end, I had installed about 2,000 styles in Darktable—so finding the right style took longer than creating the image from scratch.

Compatibility.

On top of that, most styles were designed for older versions and therefore used obsolete modules.
That wouldn't even have been the main problem for me—but old styles sometimes produce very strange results because the workflow in Darktable has changed to "scene-based."

My initial approach was to organize these styles into their own folder. Since styles unfortunately can't be moved simply by dragging them with the mouse, this would have required editing each individual style via "Edit" and then modifying the name (using a pipe character to separate the folder).
To be honest, I didn’t have the time or the motivation to do that.

Tidying up.

Unlike organizing, clearing out all styles takes just a single mouse click. To do this, simply reset the Styles module, and all styles are deleted—including the ones that Darktable now comes with by default. Which briefly got my heart racing.

After restarting Darktable, these Darktable-specific styles will be recreated.

Backup.

If you have styles that you've created yourself or styles that you'd like to continue using, you should back them up using the export function before cleaning up.
Just to be safe, I backed up the entire Darktable folder before cleaning up. On Linux, this folder is located in the ".config" directory.

Tip.

The styles available for download on OneCameraLens appear to be compatible with Darktable 5. At least, I haven’t found a style yet that triggers a warning about an outdated module.
But it’s also possible that I’ve only used styles that work with the current version of Darktable so far :-)
