Update To Kubuntu 23.04

Today, Kubuntu finally greeted me with a message saying that a system update was available.
This was basically my “first time” with an update like this :-)
During my previous forays into the world of Linux, Linux always disappeared from my hard drive before a new release was available.

Preparations

I back up my personal data several times a week. Documents and other files are constantly synced with the Synology NAS.
So today, it was “just” a matter of backing up the system itself. For that, I rely on Timeshift.
A new system snapshot was quickly created, and then we were ready to go.

Update/Upgrade

Basically, this process runs completely automatically. If you’ve modified configuration files manually or using a program, the updater offers to keep the modified version.
In my case, I also received a message stating that version 23.10 no longer supports two installed packages.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t tell which ones they were. A note to that effect would have been helpful. But maybe I just overlooked it.
Manually added package sources are disabled and marked with a corresponding note so you can re-enable them after the upgrade is complete. Provided they’re also compatible with version 23.10...
After just under 20 minutes, it was all over, and after a reboot, Kubuntu 23.10 loaded and immediately offered several updates.
One more reboot, and I’m happy to have the latest Kubuntu, version 23.10.
Since the updater always shows what it’s doing, I find it much more transparent than, say, a Windows Update.
That’s just Linux for you....

The missing packages

I had installed both of the uninstalled packages via a PPA. Since there were desktop shortcuts for both of them, I quickly realized that they were:
Darktable and the Rapid Photo Downloader.
So I reinstalled both, and since this is Linux, the old configurations were recognized :-)

So far, I haven’t encountered any problems.

Try Kubuntu

As is common with Linux, you can safely try out Kubuntu using a USB flash drive.
You can download the "image" from the Kubuntu homepage.

You can find more publications about Linux in this category.
