Back To Windows

In this article, you'll find out why I switched back from Linux (Kubuntu) to Windows.
This post isn't a Windows vs. Linux comparison.
I'm simply explaining here the reasons why I decided to switch back to Windows 11.
- At first, I was running Kubuntu and Mint in a virtual machine. At that point, everything was great, and I was completely satisfied with Linux. Apparently, I had forgotten just how often I actually use my favorite Windows programs.
- If my favorite programs (assuming they can be made to run) can be launched under Wine, why not just run them directly under Windows? Over the last few days, I've been working more with Wine than with native Linux programs. Examples include my favorite text editor, Notepad++, and Photoline.
Sure, there are Linux text editors and graphics programs, but I’m a creature of habit when it comes to software.
- RAW processing:
Darktable is available for both Linux and Windows. So Linux wouldn't be a deal-breaker either
- Graphics editing: In my opinion, no Linux program can hold a candle to Affinity Photo, Designer, Publisher, or Photoline. No matter how much I try to make GIMP look like Photoshop with PhotoGimp, it just doesn't cut it.
- The hassle: In my specific case (graphics editing, video editing, RAW processing), I spent more time trying to get the programs to work the way I wanted than I did actually working productively.
Of course, a new operating system and new programs require a learning curve.
But in the end, it was simply too much of my time to invest.
- Office Programs: When it comes to office programs, Softmaker Office is an excellent alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite. However, it doesn't include an email client. I've really given Thunderbird and KMail more than one chance. But the Linux alternatives don't come close to Outlook or even eM Client—which, of course, is entirely subjective.
- Black Screen: Sure, it's no big deal if, after logging in, KDE Plasma decides to stay black for the day and I have to restart via the console. But it gets annoying over time.
- Nvidia drivers and Linux are certainly not a love affair. I couldn't install the latest driver offered through the driver manager. By that point, though, I was already at the stage where tweaking any configurations was starting to get on my nerves.
In the end, it was the accumulation of many little things that eventually became so annoying that I asked myself if I was really willing to put up with it anymore. I haven't even written anything about games yet....
In the end, I wasn't, so here I am back in front of a Windows system.
It’s a shame, really....
P.S.: More articles (not just about Linux) can be found in this category.
Update 2026: I've now made the permanent switch to Linux (currently Mint) and am almost completely satisfied.
