Back To Zenphoto

And once again, my journey leads me back to Zenphoto....

Background

For a somewhat longer period of time, I had three different websites with nearly identical content online.

Piwigo for a blog-only site,
Publii for a blog only,
and Zenphoto for both a blog and a gallery.

A few months ago, I had the idea that I could run everything on WordPress (again). So I dusted off the old WordPress installation and updated it to the latest version.
Everything worked perfectly.

The Little Things

After just a few weeks, it became clear to me why I had switched away from WordPress back then.
Starting with the sometimes quite slow backend and the tedious search for the plugin that was slowing it down. All the way to what I find missing in every WordPress gallery solution I’m familiar with. And I’ve installed just about every gallery out there at some point.
Sometimes the map feature is missing; other times, there’s no comment function.

The Bigger Things

It's especially great when, once again, a plugin crashes your system and the website throws a critical error.
That's exactly what happened last night with Nextgen Gallery Pro. In that case, you'll at least need to install the previous version.

I've never experienced glitches like this after updates, either with Piwigo or Zenphoto.
That might be due to the different plugin ecosystem and the sheer number of WordPress plugins—but it doesn't change the fact that a broken website is a real nuisance.

Miscellaneous

As far as I know, WordPress cannot match the way specialized systems like Piwigo and Zenphoto handle image management. It always takes more effort to do things like add new images.

Right now, I'm once again surprised at how easy it is to write posts in Zenphoto. That's how it goes when you're not distracted by other things or have to spend time figuring out where to add images in the block editor.
I also find that “multilingual” content is easier to manage in Zenphoto than in WordPress. Since I’ve received a few inquiries on this topic, such as “Is this article also available in English?”, I’m currently in the process of making the content bilingual.

As I write this post, I'm really enjoying Zenphoto.
