Nature Park Hohe Mark
Where can I find the Hohe Mark?
The Hohe Mark Nature Park is located on the border between the Ruhr region and the Münsterland and is most easily reached via the A43 highway.
Alternatively, you can travel there via the A31 highway.
On the A43, the Haltern or Lavesum exits are convenient; if coming from the A31, the Lembeck or Reken exits are recommended.
The park features an excellently marked network of hiking and biking trails. For longer hikes, it is advisable to bring appropriate maps.
Parking
There are parking lots at almost all the points of interest—and that’s where the loop trails begin.
The main trails are well-maintained—but for the smaller trails (especially after it has rained), sturdy shoes are recommended.
For Photographers
From a photographic standpoint, the nature park offers everything you’d expect from the local flora. Interesting flowers and plants can be found along the trail.
As for animals, you’ll mostly get to capture the local red deer with your camera—provided you have the patience.
However, this usually happens off the main trails, on the smaller paths that are also marked as hiking trails.
Understandably, you’ll need a bit of luck and patience here. Please stick to the marked trails and don’t just trudge across the open country.
For those who like it simple
If you want to keep it simple:
Visit the Granat Nature Wildlife Park, located right in the middle of the park.
There, you’ll have the chance to photograph native red deer without any stress and more or less in the wild.
The park has a very large open enclosure, which is the main reason dogs aren’t allowed in the park.
A real highlight is the wolf feeding—but it doesn’t take place every day. It’s best to check with the park in advance.
Preferably on weekdays
The Hohe Mark Nature Park is becoming increasingly popular with day-trippers from the Ruhr region.
If you want to go on an “animal photo safari,” you should look for a quieter starting point.
Especially if you want to photograph animals: It’s best to choose a weekday.
It’s best to check on available parking spots before your trip.
For Hikers and Cyclists
There is a very well-marked network of trails, ranging from short walks to day hikes. However, places to take shelter are few and far between.
You should therefore pack a rain jacket.
Food and Drink
I can wholeheartedly recommend these two restaurants located in Klein Reken:
Alter Garten
Wirtshaus Heiming
Personally, I really like both restaurants.
